Fall Fashion: Bringing Back the Classics

Even if the weather doesn’t agree, fall is here! What better way to channel the charm of autumn than through vintage-inspired pieces that bring a unique touch to any modern wardrobe? From retro textures to timeless silhouettes, there are countless ways to incorporate some classic fall fashion staples that are as stylish today as they were in decades past.

Corduroy Jackets and Pants: The Quissentensial Fall Fabric

With its ribbed texture and warm feel, Corduroy has been a fall staple since the 1970s. Its structured yet soft texture makes it ideal for colder days, and it’s a versatile piece that adds depth to any outfit. Try a corduroy blazer or jacket in earthy shades like dark brown, olive, or tan for a cozy yet polished look.  Alternatively, mix corduroy pants with a chunky sweater or patterned blouse to create an effortlessly vintage vibe perfect for campus.

Leather accessories: Bags, Boots, Belts

Leather bags, belts, and boots are investments that will last season after season. When it comes to timeless fall accessories, vintage leather pieces are unbeatable. Leather’s durability and worn-in look make it perfect for adding warmth and personality to any outfit, and vintage items often have the added charm of unique craftsmanship and natural aging that modern pieces can’t replicate. A high-quality leather bag is an investment that can last for years, and a vintage one carries with it a sense of history. Practicality is important, especially for Penn students. Look for a slouchy leather tote or hobo bag both of which have a more relaxed feel while still fitting your books and technology.

Vintage-style bags can look so chic with almost anything! This genuine leather option is a great fall investment for school and every day!

While they might seem like a small addition, vintage leather belts can completely transform an outfit. Look for wide belts with large, ornate buckles for a true vintage vibe, or opt for thinner belts if you prefer subtle accents. These belts can be used to cinch oversized sweaters, adding structure and a flattering silhouette. For a more retro feel, try tucking a fitted T-shirt into slouchy jeans and finishing the look with a leather belt.

Wool Coats: Classic and Practical

Now, for my personal favorite fall item, wool coats. Few items capture the essence of fall as perfectly as a wool coat. With their durability, warmth, and often unique charm, wool coats are a must-have for a cozy and polished autumn wardrobe. These pieces are known for their high-quality materials and tailoring, often showcasing craftsmanship that fast-fashion coats lack. Whether you prefer a sleek, tailored look or a cozy, oversized fit, a vintage-style wool coat adds an unmistakable touch of sophistication to any outfit. Let’s explore the types of wool coats to look for and how to style them for the season.

Peacoats: Short and stylish

Peacoats are a classic wool coat style that offers warmth without the bulk of a long coat. They’re especially perfect for layering over a knit sweater and scarf, creating a cozy yet stylish look for colder days. For maximum versatility, look for a well-fitted peacoat in classic colors like black, navy, or gray.

Even with the warmer weather, explore ways to make each outfit stylish and practical, whether experimenting with earthy tones or layering classic pieces with depth and warmth. With its emphasis on cozy textures and thoughtful layering, fall fashion allows us to create looks that transition from chilly mornings to warmer afternoons. So, embrace the season's warmth by curating a wardrobe filled with classic essentials that feel like fall, even if the weather doesn’t.
