After 26 years at Alexander McQueen, the world of fashion was taken by surprise with the news of Sarah Burton’s departure. The creative director’s departure marks the end of an era in the fashion industry, as she leaves behind a legacy of innovation, creativity, and a deep connection to the brand's eponymous founder, Lee Alexander McQueen.

Burton joined the company in 1996 as an intern and was soon appointed head of womenswear in 2000. As Alexander McQueen’s successor after his death in 2010, she transformed the brand into a modern luxury powerhouse. Burton's McQueen is known for its exquisite craftsmanship, romantic silhouettes, and deep reverence for the female form.

Her debut collection for the brand referenced much of McQueen’s craft and drama, while incorporating her own signatures, from supple tailoring to wearable edginess. Her work has been celebrated by critics and consumers alike. She has created some of the most iconic dresses of recent years, including the Princess of Wale’s ivory lace wedding gown which landed her position as Middleton’s designer of choice. Burton's work has also been worn by celebrities such as Salma Hayek, Cate Blanchett, and Beyoncé.

Burton’s final show at Paris Fashion Week was dedicated to Alexander McQueen himself, paying homage to his wish to empower women. Opening the SS24 show was Kaia Gerber sporting an exaggerated hourglass, a tribute to the dark glamor originally embodied by the brand.

In addition to her commercial success, Burton has also been praised for her commitment to sustainability and ethical fashion. She has used sustainable materials in her collections and has worked with charities to support artisans and craftspeople around the world. Her tenure was marked by a constant exploration of new materials and techniques, resulting in visually stunning and emotionally evocative garments.

Sean McGirr, previous head of menswear for JW Anderson, is now set to take over from Burton at the creative helm. Only time will tell what the future holds for Alexander McQueen. However, one thing is for sure: her influence will continue to shape the fashion industry for years to come.

Whatever the future holds for Alexander McQueen, it is clear that Sarah Burton has left a lasting legacy. Her work has elevated the brand to new heights, and she has inspired generations of designers. Her departure is a loss for the fashion industry, but her legacy will continue to live on.
