Fashion Surrounding The Wicked Movie
Amidst all the holiday craziness, people of all ages have been flocking to theaters to watch the new box office smash hit: Wicked. Anyone on social media this past month has probably seen promotions, interviews, debates and critiques surrounding the world of Wicked. But rather than debating what “holding space” really means, this article aims to break down one aspect of the movie the producers absolutely nailed — the clothing. Both in the film itself and the cast's personal style picks on both the press tour and at the premier. Here are my highlights:
Dazzling in the color of the seasons, Ariana Grande decided to close the press tour at the London premiere wrapped in a custom butter yellow and matching wrap. Embodying her character, the pastel princess Glinda. The tulle ball gown features a tight bodice on top of a gorgeous full skirt. The matching wrap accentuated the dress perfectly, adding a unique touch to the traditional silhouette. The wrap draped from Grande’s arms, trailing into the dresses ultra long train, and giving a rather whimsical sense to the look in general, perfect for the Wicked theme.
At the same premier in London, Star of the movie Cynthia Erivo wore black Schiaparelli couture. The dress was a striking blend of haute couture and both the star's personal style and her character Elphaba’s signature dark aesthetic. The high neck of the dress contrasted with the lack of sleeves, already making the dress a statement. The fitted bodice breaks at the hips into a large structural skirt made from several materials. The dress also includes an embellished section, highlighting Schiaparelli’s frequent use of metals and other dense materials within their clothing. The outfit was styled perfectly with matching gloves and embellished matching tights.
Michelle Yeoh stepped out at the Wicked Premiere in Los Angeles in a gorgeous black embellished gown by Balenciaga. The gown was long sleeved and featured rip like elements at the sides, shoulders and sleeves. The star accessorized with a new hair color, sporting a blonde bob, as well as a diamond necklace and rings.
Moving onto another Wicked actress, Marissa Bode has been debuting some impressive looks throughout the press tour. Her looks have little drops of the Wicked world embedded within them. For example, she started the tour off in Australia with a pair of silver shoes, similar to the ones her character receives in the movie. My favorite look of hers is a gold sequin dress from Aknvas, complemented with Jimmy Choo heels and jewelry from Levain.
Killing it once again, Michelle Yeoh also stunned in London with a strapless leather and silk dress from Bottega Veneta. The floor length gown features shades of green and mint as well as black leather, creating a unique blend of textures and shape. The silhouette of the dress is a gorgeous simple straight fit, with a slight structural elements on the side made from the leather detailing of the dress giving it a one of a kind look.
Last but not least, we are back to our co-stars Erivo and Grande, both wore absolutely stunning pieces to the premiere in Mexico City. Grande chose an iridescent light pink Versace gown with a deep V neckline and large ruffle skirt. Erivo picked a black Thom Browne look including a hood, long sleeves, and witch hand details. The body of the dress holds an hourglass structure and is embellished with silver and black details. Both stars absolutely nailed the essence of their characters with these looks, making them my favorites of the tour.
To keep some magic alive, I’ve left the clothes from the movie itself up to you to go see, but spoiler alert: they’re everything you’re imagining and more. If you’ve already seen the movie, you know the looks I’m talking about. Overall, the entire production is given the green light from me, and I believe it is a must see. While that's the end of our article, it's not nearly the end of Wicked, as this is only part 1. Keep tuning into press events and interviews to see what the stars of the screen are wearing, and if you haven’t already, go see Wicked!!
