With this spike in popularity, renowned stores and designers, like Nordstrom and Tory Burch, have started selling a diverse range of ballet flat designs to appeal to a wide array of consumers. It's safe to say that the ascension of ballet flats in the fashion hierarchy is apparent. Nonetheless, their rise has stirred debate within the realm of professional ballet.

Some ballet professionals express apprehension that the growing mainstream popularity of the shoe perpetuates the trivialization of ballet as an art form. Already, ballet is often simplified for mass consumption. Most ballet critics feel this popularization reduces the art of ballet to a mere aesthetic or trend. 

Moreover, beyond the professional ballet world, concerns about ballet flats also arise within the medical community. According to WebMD, ballet flats lack adequate support for the foot. Because of an "overload" on the joints around the knee, wearing the shoe too often could lead to arthritis in the knee joints.
