Pharrell’s Impact Across Creative Outlets
Everybody knows Pharrell - from his hit songs “Happy” to “Get Lucky”, he’s guaranteed to get you on your feet and grooving. His long time presence in the hip-hop and pop genres haven’t gone unnoticed, dominating the charts in the early 2000s and more recent years. But do you really know Pharrell? Spanning many creative genres, he’s also a main figure in the fashion world, continuously a trendsetter within the streetwear community.
Pharrell’s fashion beginnings were humble, combining his own knack for colorful pieces and eclectic prints to create a unique aesthetic within the streetwear genre. His hip-hop presence only amplified this, making a lasting presence with his clothes and flashy accessories. Eventually collaborating with Nigo, a Japanese designer well known for creating Bape, Pharrell created the Billionaire Boys Club, a streetwear brand with overwhelming success. Through this avenue, Pharrell developed a relationship with Louis Vuitton and collaborated with Marc Jacobs for a “Millionaire Sunglasses” piece in their collection. As fate would have it, he’s their new Men’s Creative Director 20 years later.
Pharrell’s debut Louis Vuitton collection for Spring/Summer 2024 featured a camouflage, blocky style. Incorporating his own love of bold prints, the collection became a hit with the public and cemented his addition to the luxury brand. Reflecting on his accessory use in his hip-hop era, full of large, diamond encrusted chains and pendants, the LV collection showcases several distinct pieces. While talking about this collection, Pharrell told GQ, “The way I’ve always designed is from the perspective of the consumer.” Pharrell’s charm in part is due to his ability to design in accordance with his own style interests while allowing the pieces to adapt to the consumer’s personality.
In the wake of the new year, Pharrell unveiled the Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter 2024 collection, full of references back to the American West. The collection featured innovative takes on the traditional cowboy style including many taupe, burgundy, and teal accents alongside floral embroideries catered to suit silhouettes. Although hosted in Paris, the elaborate backdrops alluded to Pharrell's home state of Virginia. Throughout his blossoming career, Pharrell has never once strayed from his beginnings, using his music to pursue fashion and expanding upon both avenues simultaneously.
The future of Pharrell’s involvement in the fashion industry is a bright avenue, keeping us all excited for what’s to come. Pharrell has proven he’s a man full of ambitious energy, harnessing his interests and directing them into specific outlets. His countless musical and fashion related successes granted him a platform upon which he continues to do greater things, in particular his role in shaping society’s future through his desire to see more leading Black figures to join their ambassador program. Through sound and style alike, Pharrell has embraced the capacity to speak to people across diverse spheres.
