The Power of a White Tank

There are a lot of awful feelings to experience in your life. The absolute worst one? Having plans in thirty minutes and absolutely nothing to wear. It is a universal sense of panic, but luckily, the current fashion trends are in our favor. In fact, I would argue that the only thing you need to look put together and chic is something you (hopefully) already have: a white tank.

This season, a white tank is the most versatile piece to have in your closet. Need a quick, cute outfit for Saturday morning coffee? Grab a plain white tank and your favorite pair of sweats, throw a colored hoodie over your shoulders, layer your jewelry, and go! Going to class? Pair a white tank top with comfortable jeans, bring a cute sweater and your school bag, and get yourself to your 10:15 lecture. Have dinner plans but nothing to wear? White tank, fun skirt, boots, and bag. Do you see the pattern here?

Admittedly, I was the first to question the true versatility of a plain white tank; as a coffee drinker prone to spilling, wearing a $75 white shirt that I purchased in an attempt to “invest in basics” can be a little daunting. Fortunately, there is room in this fashion era for everyone. While the popular tankair pieces are flattering, high-quality options, brands like Aritzia, Skims, and Zara offer much more affable, yet just as adorable, options. Whether you choose a ribbed version, a tube top, or a sleek fitted look, these brands will have an option that works for you.

However, my favorite white tank top, which I reach for the most, is under ten dollars, and you can buy a huge pack on Amazon (we all have to feed into fast fashion sometimes). Fashion influencer Hannah Krohne has claimed that the tank top most worn by “influencers, celebrities, and Instagram baddies” is a Hanes ribbed white tank. She is not wrong: I can guarantee you have seen this piece on all  your favorite influencers simply because it’s the best! I always have a few of them lying around, whether it’s to throw over a matching workout set, pair with a sequin skirt for a party, or watch my favorite TV show.

Whether it’s “recession fashion,” going back to the basics, or a microtrend in and of itself, I could not be more excited about it. A staple white top provides the perfect canvas to build an outfit that screams “you,” mainly because you can do whatever you want on top of it!
